Challenges of Public Writing in the classroom

Teaching kids how to express their thoughts is tough. At a young age, they figure out that those who speak the loudest are often the only ones heard. It does not mean that what the screamers are saying is better or more important than what they have to say, it just means that it is tougher and a little more scary to share.

I really want kids to know that their voice has meaning, is important and should be heard! I also want them to know that the form is far less important than the content and context. Poetry, prose, rap and visual splashs can all tell one's story and one's opinion.

I hope that I can develop this desire to share their voice within the hearts and minds of my students. I hope that they will grow to be unafraid to share and know that words DO HAVE POWER and CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
